Addressing the concluding session of the 2026 BRICS Summit in New Delhi, Modi stressed the importance of cooperation at a time when geopolitical tensions, supply-chain disruptions and competition over strategic resources are reshaping the global economy.
He argued that emerging technologies and critical mineral resources should contribute to development rather than become instruments for restricting access or creating economic pressure. Critical minerals are increasingly important for industries such as semiconductors, electric vehicles, renewable energy, batteries and advanced manufacturing, making their availability a major strategic concern for economies worldwide.
Modi also highlighted the need for more resilient and diversified supply chains. Greater cooperation among BRICS members, he suggested, could help countries manage disruptions while ensuring that developing economies are not left behind in the technology race.
The Prime Minister called for technology to remain accessible and inclusive, particularly for sectors that directly affect people’s lives. He pointed to areas such as agriculture, where digital tools, artificial intelligence and innovative solutions could improve productivity and support farmers.
His remarks came as BRICS seeks to strengthen its role in shaping global economic and technological cooperation. The expanded grouping now represents a significant share of the world’s population and includes major producers and consumers of energy, raw materials and technology.
Chinese President Xi Jinping, meanwhile, announced an initiative to develop an open-source artificial intelligence ecosystem among BRICS countries, underscoring the growing importance of technology on the grouping’s agenda.
The summit’s discussions reflected a broader push by BRICS members to build stronger cooperation in technology, trade, supply chains, energy and sustainable development. India’s emphasis on preventing the strategic misuse of technology and resources adds another dimension to the bloc’s efforts to promote a more resilient and inclusive global economic system.
